Dance To Health Director
The director of the Dance to Health Society, Ms. Kumud Mathur is from Potomac, Maryland. She is extensively trained in Kathak, a north Indian classical dance and is proficient in many folk dances from the Indian subcontinent. Mathur is trained in Kathak with Guru Shri Kundan Lalji from the Jaipur Gharana of Kathak, a very authentic style of the dance. Her folk dance training is traditional and she has earned a diploma in dance and Tabla (Indian drums).
Her performance experience is vast and even includes Indian Universities-sponsored youth festivals and competitions, in which she represented her home state. Other venues include the Smithsonian Institution, Asian Pacific American heritage events and inter-faith festivals in the Metro Washington DC region. She performed for Montgomery got talent recently. She conducts dance workshops for DC libraries and Schools, American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI), Senior Homes and Community Centers. Her class has been televised on ABC7 WJLA, FOX5 and NBC4 TVs. She is a practicing mathematician. Thus designs and choreographs the dances beautifully.
Mathur believes that the key to success in life is good health and happiness, and best way to maintain health is exercise and perfect exercise is to dance on popular music. She started the Dance to health Society in 1990. Since then she is conducting classes and presenting workshops to stay in shape while learning an art. She also teaches Laughter Yoga Fitness to provide instant happiness.
Jaya Mathur Patil
Dance Instructor
Jaya has been trained in three forms of Indian classical dance, Bharatnatyam, Kathak and Manipuri. Each style is from a different part of India and has its own unique style. She also has learned Indian folk dances from Rajasthan and Punjab, India and Bollywood dance. Jaya has studied Bharatnatyam from Mrs. Charu Narasimhan, Kathak from Krishan Mohan Maharaj from Kathak Kendra in New Delhi and Manipuri from Guruji Nabha Singha.
Jaya has performed at many different venues including, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., the Smithsonian Freer/Sackler Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. and at various cultural events at the University of Maryland in College Park. She has also performed at the Indian Embassy.
Jaya teaches classical, folk and Bollywood dance. Her students have performed at cultural shows at universities, temples and folk life events.
